So much internet debate over this. . . I've just come to accept that dampening is interchangeable with damping. Look up the definitions and both work. One is just the technically correct term.

Damper and dampener are interchangeable. Kind of like gage and gauge. Convention now is to use damper, but both are correct. If you want to totally avoid the issue, just go with dashpot.
